"My first meeting with James was in February 2018. Just 8 weeks before I had a total knee replacement, I was told with a BMI of 40.9 that I was very lucky my consultant would still operate. James gave me a daily calorie allowance, home exercises to do and told me that I had to send him photos of my meals. We also worked on strength and mobility to help with my recovery after my operation. James kept in contact and after about 8 weeks I was back in the gym doing gentle rehabilitation exercises.
Over the last year, I have seen James on a weekly basis and I have had a few occasions where I have completely lost the plot with my food. He has bought me back on track by dealing with my state of mind and encouraging me to talk about why this happened. He made me realise I have come so far, not to give up and to carry on with my journey.
I can now do squats, lunges etc and I am able to kneel on the floor pain free. I am waiting for the other knee to be replaced and I have managed to reduce my BMI to 31.7. I have so much more energy than before.
James puts a positive spin on every negative comment I make. The online contact during the rest of the week is invaluable, especially if you have a wobble. The physiotherapist at Christchurch Hospital said I was lucky to have found a personal trainer as good as James and he wishes there were more like him. "I started slowing down in my early 40's, lost some of my sparkle and energy. A couple of years went by and one day decided to give up smoking overnight ( 30 years and 40-60 a day!) amazing, huh?! Not for me....2 weeks later came my first heart attack! After that the weight piled on as the doctors tried to find the reason for the heart attack. Then I was diagnosed with one of the worst cases of Sleep Apnea that Bournemouth Hospital had seen ( I would stop breathing up to 150 times an hour....how is that even possible?!) The doctors struggled to find a way to help me. In March this year I joined my mate James for PT sessions once or twice a week and we started to do a little interval training between Boscombe and Bournemouth piers. Then a friend mentioned the Bournemouth Bay run....Yes! We took the plunge and signed up for the 5K. We only went and did it and survived.....But thats when I got hooked and okay, I admit it, slightly obsessed - and as they say the rest is history. Last weekend I ran my 1st 10K race at Moors Valley and my 2nd is in less than two weeks at Poole! So the moral of my little story? NEVER SAY NEVER! I nearly died 4 times, I am now 49 years old and if I can change and do it?...ANYONE CAN!!! (At my biggest I was 56" chest/belly, 50+" waist and a 22" neck! Now? Its still a work in progress but at the moment I am a 45" chest, 36" waist and a 17" neck...)"
